Emmersyn’s Birth Story

Submitted by Victoria Arya on October 30, 2009 – 6:31 pm14 Comments

Y’all know that I was scheduled to get induced on Monday the 26th…so I got up that morning at 5 AM and called the hospital and they said “Come on in!”…which was a good thing since I don’t know if I could have handled being cancelled.  Anyways so hubby and I got done, I actually put a little effort into it and straightened my hair LOL.  So, on the way to the hospital I made hubby stop at Dunkin Donuts and get my a hot chocolate and a biscuit…that’s right, I was healthy and didn’t get a donut…what was I thinking?

Anways we get to the hospital and get taken to the L & D room…loeand behold it is the EXACT same room I have had both the older girls in…life is weird.  Anyways, I get changed into my choice of birthing gear (a cheap sweatshirt from Target :-p) and then we sit back and wait for my doctor to come along.  Now, he was suppose to be there at 7:30 AM, but Dr. W tends to run on his own time and in his own little world so he didn’t show up until 8:30…let’s say hubby was a bit annoyed and since I was expecting it I didn’t care.

So, they got me all hooked up on the Pitocin (did I mention I had a newbie putting in my IV…ouch…I wonder if she could tell I was talking through gritted teeth?) and they started me off.  I was bored and there was nothing to do.  So for the next 6 hours they bumped my pitocinup until it was maxed out and until I was having contractions ever 2-3 minutes.  Now, they weren’t painful but they did get to be annoying so by about 4 I put up the computer just to chat with people and whatnot.  Now, here is where I can say that at lunchtime Dr. W came in to check me…he could have at that time broken my water and I would have had the baby in less than 2 hours, BUT…he decided to spread out his deliveries and made me wait until dinner time to break my water.  FUN.

So during this time of waiting I had to deal with my hubby bouncing off the walls (quite literally) until I made him go take a walk a couple of times, I didn’t really get a good lunch (BOOO) and there was a screamer in the room next door…I was feeling all bad for her until the nurses told me she was on her second epiand had an IV filled with other pain meds…man I wonder what she does with a paper cut?  Dr. W was her doctor too and I told him to tell her to curse like a sailor since it felt better than saying “OWWWW” all the time LOL.

After Dr. W broke my water at about 5 the contractions started getting painful rather than annoying, but I was still waffling about getting an epi.  I finally decided to do it since I was pretty darn tired and wanted the chance to rest a bit and since I didn’t know how long it was going to take.  So, in comes the epi doctor…who happens to be a giant at 6′5″ and they work to getting my epi in.  Well once that gets done (I am still feeling all of the pain at this moment) they tell me to lie back and let the meds work up from my feet to my tummy.  Hmmm…right as they hit my thighs I notice that the meds are getting any higher and that darnit I can still feel everything going on…BOOOOO.  So, after moving, upping the dosage, and more the nurse was just like…sorry.  By then I was ok with the epinot working…I figured I might have jinxed myself because I was all curious about what it felt like to go natural.  So anyways, by this time I was so completely focused within I didn’t feel like chatting or talking with people…and I forgot to do the one thing the nurse asked me to.  What was that?

I forgot to let her know when I was feeling pressure around my bottom (i.e. I didn’t let her know when I felt the head down there)  OPPS

So, in one of my laying on my side positions I realized that if I didn’t get on my back and get a nurse into the room that I would have the baby without pushing right on the bed…so I flopped over and made hubby call a nurse…who immediately said ok breathe while I get Dr. W.

Dr. W walked in, took a look…told me to grab my legs and push for a sec…I did…he said ok stop…I did and then he was putting a baby on my chest.  Seriously…about .5 seconds of pushing and there she was…I’m pretty sure I didn’t need to push at all.  He called it the “most controlled delivery I have seen in all the years I have been practicing”.  GO ME!

Emmersyn’s APGARs were 9 and 9 and everyone was commenting on how good she looked and how perfect “this is the way most moms expect their newborn to look…and usually they look much worse” was how one nurse put it.

Now the good stuff.

I sent hubby home after they cleaned me up and took Emmy to the nursery for a wash.  I chatted online a bit and then went to bed about 11.  I woke up at 11:42 because I thought I had wet myself and I was totally embarrassed.  At that same point I realized that my back was hurting so bad that I immediately started crying…I never cry unless something really hurts; on the hospital pain scale my pain was at a 7-8….I rated labor at a 4-5.  So, without checking if I had actually wet myself I range for the nurse and when she came after about 2 minutes I was close to sobbing because my back hurt too much to put any pressure on it…so I was laying on my side.

Now, because my legs were so numb after the glitch in the epithey had brought in a geriatric potty and put it right beside my bed (on the indignities LOL), so the nurse helped to pull me into a sitting position and pivot on the potty.  It was at this time she saw that instead of wetting myself like I said I did…I in fact had bled everywhere.  So yeah, without going into a huge amount of details there was blood all over the bed and once they put me on the potty there was blood everywhere there too.  Apparently I had clotted right after birth and that kept a majority of the hemorrhage from coming out…as I was squirming in pain from my back one of the clots came out and so did everything else…it was disgusting.

It took about an hour for them to clean up, get me set and stop bleeding and then they had to do the “I have to press down as hard as I can on your stomach to make sure there is nothing else in there” maneuver.  OUCH.  Now, with all this going on my back was still a 7-8 on the pain scale so they brought me pain meds which put me out of my misery.

After a night of constant visits and BP checks (apparently mine when too low a couple of times) along with pain pills, I was able to sleep and feed Emmy a couple of times.  When Dr. W came in that morning he told me it was a good thing the clots came out and made a mess all over otherwise I might have gotten a serious infection and needed surgery (fun!) and that my back could be one of two things: a dislocated tailbone or a hurt ligament…neither of which they can do much about.  So, I was sent home (after begging and pleading) with an RX for pain pills and a directive to call about other clots.  Fun.

Now, I am really happy that my labor and delivery went well and smooth.  I am also happy that I am the one who had issues after birth, not Emmy.  But I have to say that I have never been more embarrassed in my life…seriously there is nothing like sitting naked expect for a bra on a geriatric potty while people rush around you asking about your bleeding, making you move so they can look, and just being medially professional.  Hugely embarrassing…I still have a problem talking about bodily functions; it’s hard when it’s strangers who are dealing with you at your very worst!  Luckily there were no lasting complications with that hemorrhage…apparently it was on the small side or they would have needed to take more drastic measures.  I am weak and will be weak until I build up enough fluids again…but other than that I am healthy in that regard.  My back is something else entirely…the pain hasn’t gotten better so I now need to work with a doctor to figure out what to do until either the ligament or tailbone heals.  Fun :-)

Wow, sweetie. That is an amazing birth story! I am SO glad you rang for a nurse…don’t be embarassed, just know that they have seen WAY worse than that :)

I am glad you both are doing so well and I love her name! Get some rest and congrats again!

  • Carole says:

Well I’m glad the delivery went well. Let me tell you, I had the exact same thing with the bleeding after delivery (May of this year). I was fine for a bit then “hmmmm” and all the same with the massaging and the low BP etc etc… they told me it was b/c the baby delivered so quick that the uterus didn’t have time to adjust or something. Anyhow, I was pale for a while after, but bounced right back, which I’m sure you will too. I know it is near impossible with other little ones at home, but really, really, take it easy as much as you can b/c it can take a few weeks for your levels to get back up again. Take care!!

I hope that you feel better soon. I remember the nurses coming and pressing hard on my belly (afterwards) too. That hurt so bad!!!
I also can relate to your husband. Mine was the same way…I finally told mine to go to work and come back later! Ha!
Thanks for sharing your story. You did great!

  • Betty says:

    Thanks for sharing details.

With the first, we played cards the first day waiting for picotin to do its thing. The second day they broke my water and yes, there’s something about husbands and lack of patience – he got sent to gym to work off some energy. Things were moving along nicely when he got back.
Anyway, so glad the baby is fine and you had such a wonderful labor and delivery. Emmersyn is beautiful and could be used as a 9/9 APGAR poster baby.
I remember being checked and rechecked, massaging of the utereus was scheduled a couple times after giving birth with both of my kids. My experience was at military hospitals and a few years back when they routinely kept us 48 hrs even though civilian hospitals had shifted to 24hrs or less.
Congratulations to Mama on the wonderful labor & delivery. Good thoughts and prayers that this whole back pain issue gets resolved and you heal quickly.

Thank God you’re ok. I’m glad the clot came out!! Congrats on a beautiful baby girl, and the easy delivery.

I am so glad you are okay. You had a great delivery and it was fun chatting with you while you were there! She is just beautiful! PS I had similar issues after my 3rd baby too. My bp was really low the whole time from the bleeding but I started bleeding immediately after birth so it was all caught. But when they push on you that hurts worse than when you didn’t bleed!

  • Lindley says:

Glad things went smoothly and enjoy the new little one. We are experiencing the joys of our 6-week old as we speak. Good Luck!

Thanks for sharing your birth story! I love hearing about other Mother’s experiences. Every one is different! I know all 4 of mine were! It’s great to here that the labor and delivery went so smoothly, but I’m sorry you had the issues afterward. I hope all is getting better now and you are enjoying that new baby! Congrats!

  • Wow! Congrats on her birth! I hope you are feeling better. That must have been scary!

    I’m glad everything is ok.

    ♥ HUGS ♥

  • Badger Momma says:

Congrats on your birth of Emmy and thanks for sharing. Don’t feel embarrassed about the hospital post delivery. Believe me, they’ve seen it all. Just be glad that it was obvious something was wrong so they could address it then and there. I hope you start feeling better very soon!

  • Winter says:

I am very happy you’re ok. That’s so scarey. Get well soon and give that baby lots of smooches.

  • Marianne says:

OMG – what excitement! I am glad you are ok and hope the back gets better soon!

  • Tara says:

Congrats Victoria! Sounds like it all went a little crazy there for a bit, but so glad your both healthy and happy :)

  • Amy says:

I am so glad that you got through delivery fine but I would have been totally embarrassed in your position too. That said I am certain that they see much worse every day – although I know that doesn’t mean a thing when it’s you they’re looking at!
