Lands’ End Sport Squall Parka-The Perfect Winter Coat for Kids

Submitted by Victoria Arya on November 18, 2009 – 11:37 amOne Comment

lands-endWith winter either right around the corner or right on your doorstep, having a good coat is important…especially for the kiddos.  Now, I have to admit that I was woefully not prepared for this winter…mostly because I focused on finding cute coats rather than coats that were actually good all around for the kiddos; especially since Ellie is in preschool and she spends time outside and doesn’t have time for a froufrou coat.  So, when I was offered the chance to review a children’s coat from Lands’ Endof course I said yes…after checking out their selection I saw that their designs were practical, warm, affordable and cute…a winning combination in my mind!

So, after checking out their selection I choose the Girl’s Squall Parka in the primrose color.  Now, I know that I don’t happen to live anywhere where we might get a major blizzard or squall, but it does get cold here and occasionally snows, so it’s important for Ellie to have a coat that is warm and takes moisture…hence my choice.  And I know that I might have mentioned my aversion to the color pink, but I have to admit to liking the soft rose color of the primrose, which is why I choose the color in the first place.  But…moving on :-)   What are some of the coat’s attributes?

First off like I mentioned before it is pretty water resistant with 3 ply nylon on the outer shell with DriOff finish; I’m not scientifically sure what the DriOff finish is…but I do know that it keeps water from seeping through the outer layers of the coat (it also helps with keeping the coat clean).  One of my favorite attributes of the Squall Parka is the fact that it has a fleece lining which makes it warm and cozy.  In addition, the coat has a reflective trim all around it to make it safer to wear at night and when the kids are playing outside.

Ellie happens to really like this coat…she liked the other coats that I have for her, but she always got a bit aggravated with them because they weren’t actually play coats…they were mostly just dress coats.  With this Lands’ End coat she can run around and play and not have to worry about matting the fur or getting it super dirty (well even if she didn’t lands-end-2worry about getting the nice coats dirty, I worried about it).  And this coat, unlike other coats that are made for warmth, isn’t hugely thick…meaning Ellie doesn’t walk around like the Jiffy Lube man all squashed and unable to move about.

So, overall what’s my opinion of the Land’s End Squall Coat?  I like it: it’s well made, comfortable, affordable and looks good.  Granted it isn’t a dress coat, but in my mind perhaps a general coat is better than dress coats you have to worrying about mussing up.  Ellie likes it and can easily play in it while still being warm and comfortable.  Here is where it also pays..well discounts…to have three girls…both Eve and Emmy will be able to wear this coat in the years to come :-)   In fact, I like the Lands’ End children’s coat so much that I asked for the adult version for my birthday…now I just need to go ahead and decide what color I want.
