So…Why The H*** Am I Having Labor Induced?

Submitted by Victoria Arya on October 20, 2009 – 7:54 pm9 Comments

Alright, so I know why I am having an induction, but since a couple of people have asked why and I know more out there are thinking I am a total nutcase for not waiting for nature to take its’ course, I decided to give a quick run down of why exactly I am having my labor induced.  Now, let me be clear that I honestly don’t care that some people think I am a nutcase or that I am making the wrong decision, but I don’t have a problem explaining myself and if someone doesn’t like it then :-P

So, I am having this baby induced on the 26th for a number of reasons, first of all it is a lot easier to knowwhen this baby will come…that way I am not scrambling in the middle of the night to find someone to come watch the kiddos…I think I would actually have my hubby just stay put with them while I went to the hospital myself (what can I say, I am rather independant and I don’t like it when things get any sort of messy).  This way I have someone who has already agreed to watch the kiddos while hubby and I are at the hospital…and given the fact I am prettu sure this person is reliable I am covered on that base.

The second reason is a bit weird but stick with me…you should be aware of the fact that I am a bit off from time to time if you are a reader :-)   What date am I scheduled to have baby #3?  The 26th.  And here is my confession…I have a thing for the number SIX (6)…yes that is right, I have a thingfor the number 6.  No, I am not OCD or anything, but I can’t seem to help myself from trying to arrange things that fall on dates that work well together…especially those dates that have a 6 in them.  Ellie was born on 9/26/06 (that was natural although I would like to think I might have had something to do with it by willing her out LOL), Eve was born on 6/16/08 (she was induced too and yes I picked the date), I was born on 11/26/86, and I am scheduled to have this baby on 10/26/09…it doesn’t have the ring to it that I would really like but there is a 26 in there and I happen to really like the idea of having the same birth date as my oldest and youngest daughter.  HEY, I warned you I was jus a tiny bit odd.

I’m not really sure if there is a third reason other than my rather annoying need to be in control (surprising given the fact that I tend to be a really laid back person who couldn’t care less about control).

Now, I know most of you out there are thinking something along the lines of: well doesn’t an induction have some risks?  And truth be told yeah there are a few, but they are pretty minute and I am not worried…here’s why.

* I am a disgustingly healthy pregnant person and have disgustingly easy labors.   Alright so right now y’all are wondering why I used “disgustingly” twice in the previous sentence and there is a reason for that…I am honestly a very healthy person in general and while pregnant I never have any problems.  I rarely complain even if I have a backache from h*ll or if my feet or joints hurt so bad I don’t want to get up off the couch.  But, other than the minor things I am healthy which is a blessing and a curse…since nothing ever seems to come up I never get treated like a princess while pregnant…h*ll I don’t get any special treatment.  The same thing goes for labor…each labor has lasted about 7-8 hours…from start to finish, and I deal fine with it.  I have contractions, I say something along the lines of “D*mnit this hurts” a couple of times, I push, and there’s baby.  Have never had any problems and my doctor doesn’t expect me to.  Truthfully sometimes it’s a little annoying…maybe I would get a little respect and pampering if I wasn’t so disgustingly healthy…people have told me to my face that I am a good breeder and that I am made for having kids.  WTH?

*sigh* In fact I am such a wacko that I am considering whether or not to go with the epidural this time around.  Why?  Well two reasons…the last two times I have been bored during labor and secondly I have always wondered what it would like…yeah I know complete wacko that’s me.

well I say more power to you. Take control of the situation if you can, and btw I have a thing for the number 5 so don’t worry about it.

Your comment about being bored during labor made me chuckle. My labors were entire blurs. I mean, I remember bit of them, but for the most part, the time in labor was something my mind just sort of blocked out. Guess it’s a coping mechanism. Couldn’t say I was bored or anything. Just don’t really recall most of it. 16 hours, 5 hours, and 20 hours followed by an emergency c-section were my kids.

Try going without the epidural, you can always change your mind later. Just try to keep upright and walking around during labour. I’m a huge wimp when it comes to pain but I didn’t find labour that bad. I thought the contractions hurt more than the actual pushing itself.

How will they induce your labour? By breaking your water or with pitocin or foley catheter?

I like to think that my son heard me say “how cool would it be if he were born tomorrow, then he’d be a mathematical equation (4/5/9)” and that’s why he decided to come 2 weeks early (when I thought he’d be late). I also had no symptoms or labor pains the day before I had him…and even I told my my best friend who works in labor & delivery that I would likely have a long birth b/c it was my first & I’m short (apparently longer legs make for easier pushing)…the entire thing lasted less than 6 hours! So I’m right there with you.

Although, I wouldn’t want to induce, and I went natural as long as I could (wanted to go entirely, but figured I’d have several more hours to go), but to each their own! I’ll just be glad when you get your bag packed :p

“…even though I was told by my best friend…” Gah, need my coffee

Victoria, I think if you are making a choice that is healthy for you and baby, no one can judge. We all labor differently. Whether it is a planned C/s, emergency c/s, induction, no drugs, drugs. There are so many things. We all want something different and you should be aiming for what you want! I have an induction date set for April 13. I will be exactly 39 weeks and it is the earliest my dr will induce without medical reasons. I don’t have the same reasons as you for inducing though. My labors go quickly and I live far from the hospital. By the time I realize I am in labor, find a sitter, and then get to the hospital, it might be too late. On the other hand, I don’t plan on making it to my induction date. I do have problems. I am on bedrest til 36 weeks. So I don’t make it far past that. I do wish you all the best and to a great labor!

  • Rosey says:

Woo hoo! FIVE MORE DAYS until a new member of your family is there, hurrah!!! I wish you an easy labor, and that you get LOTS of pampering besides. Hey, baby number three is reason enough to deserve it. :)

As an aside, I have four, all easy pregnancies, all easy labors, never an epidural. I count my blessings. :)

  • Michelle says:

I completely understand why you would induce and it is totally your choice. I also choose to induce and trust me, I was always being questioned by just about EVERYONE AND ANYONE! I cannot wait to see pictures and at least you should be home for Halloween!

With Chloe, I received the meds to induce at about 7:15 Am and she was born at 8:21 AM. My first was not induced and she came super fast. The nurses almost had to deliver her without the doctors. I actually had to “hold her in”, which I did not know then was super dangerous and I will never do that again!

Good luck and keep us updated!

  • what ever u decide in the end prayers all will go well and baby will be healthy
