The Dad View of Divorce

Submitted by Victoria Arya on May 31, 2009 – 3:33 pmOne Comment

Divorce is getting more and more common, and a lot of the books, TV shows and movies out there on the subject are geared towards women and moms…helping them cope, helping them learn to be a divorced mom, helping them move forward and get on with their life.  But, there really aren’t all that many resources out their for dads who are divorced…how do they cope?  How are they suppose to move from being dad to being a “divorced dad“?  Well, Joel Schwartzberg saw the lack of material out there for divorced dads and he decided to do something about it.  What did he do?  He wrote about his own experiences as a divorced dad in a book he named: The 40-Year-Old Version-Humoirs of a Divorced Dad.

So, what exactly is this book about?  Think short life stories and lessons that show you what a real divorced dad thinks about and how he handles the trials and triumphs that life offers up.  These real life stories are the thoughts and feelings of a regular guy who learns how to deal with his divorce, his kids, and his new role in life as a sort of single parent through real life experience. ..but don’t worry, it isn’t “deep”, there us plenty of humor strewn about.

So…what do I think?  I am not a guy…so in my wildest imaginations I have no idea of how a guy would approach divorce, children and parenting, but this book really give me an insight into how one normal, average, everyday guy gets himself, his kids, and his life through a separation and divorce.  I really like the fact that this book isn’t designed in a self-help sort of way…like “do this and then do this and then in order to move on you need to do this”…self help books are great, but sometimes you just need to know how someone else did it in their own words.  Another thing that I like is that each blurb is short…you read it, you understand the meaning or the point and you are done…there are no long chapters that you have to dig yourself through or deep philisophical means that you have to interpret.

Stay Tuned!  The 40-Year-Old Version-Humoirs of a Divorced Dad will be given away in a great father’s day package!

I think it is great considering there really isn’t a lot of support for divorced dads. It also gives us insight on what the men go through or how they deal with the situation.
